Prior to Chloé’s inception in 1952, luxury fashion houses had only ever produced Haute Couture
(made-to-measure) clothing. Those who could not afford tailored designer clothing were stuck with
their local copycat seamstress’ best version from the runway.
Chloé’s creator, Gaby Aghion, sensing a gap in the market, decided to create a line of off the rack,
high quality, soft, body conscious clothes from fine fabrics, which she called ‘luxury prêt-à-porter’
and thus, the Prêt-à-Porter (ready-to-wear) market we know today, was born.
Gaby Aghion, a Parisian of Egyptian origin and her partner, Jacques Lenoir, introduced the first
collection at Le Café de Flore, one of their favourite cafes and the meeting place of artists in Paris.
The line has seen designers like Christiana Bailly, Michèle Rosier, Maxime de la Falaise, Graziella
Fontana, Tan Giudicelli, Guy Paulin, Carlos Rodriguez and of course, Karl Lagerfeld.
The Chloé brand has had many famous followers including Jackie Kennedy, Brigitte Bardot, Maria
Callas, Grace Kelly, Kirsten Dunst, Natalie Portman, and Lou Doillon.
Chloé’s most recent endeavour is their childrenswear spring, summer line for 2010, which brings the
refined elegance of their signature Prêt-à-Porter line to the mini fashionistas of the world.
